Exploring the Best of Bali: My Favorite Destinations and Experiences

Bali is one of those magical places that brings together stunning landscapes, rich culture, and a tranquil vibe that just invites you to relax and explore. My journey through Bali was filled with incredible experiences, eco-friendly stays, local flavors, and activities that nurtured both my sense of adventure and personal growth. From the peaceful rice fields of Sideman to the breathtaking sunrise hike at Mount Batur, here’s a breakdown of my favorite spots and experiences on this beautiful island.

1. Ubud: A Yoga Retreat in Nature’s Lap

I started my journey in Ubud, where I had an enriching yoga retreat. Look at my previous post to read all about it. I stayed at Joglo Organik Guesthouse, an eco-friendly hideaway surrounded by endless rice fields. This little paradise offered a perfect blend of nature and comfort. The guesthouse is close to small, independent shops and eco-conscious restaurants that emphasize sustainability and local produce. One of the highlights here was sipping on fresh coconut water straight from the tree—the ultimate refreshing drink, and one of my favorites!

What to Do in Ubud:

  • Explore rice field walks and small paths leading to hidden organic cafes.

  • Spend time at the Ubud Market to discover local handicrafts.

  • Experience a traditional Balinese massage (a 1.5-hour massage for around £10 – yes, every day! this is not just Ubud it's all over Bali).

  • Don’t miss drinking fresh coconut water—hydrating and oh-so-delicious!

2. Sideman: Living in Harmony with Nature

Leaving Ubud, we ventured to Sideman, a lesser-known gem tucked away from the tourist crowds. Sideman offers a glimpse of the genuine village life in Bali, with locals working tirelessly in the rice fields. Our stay at Kubu Sakian Villa was an immersion into the simplicity of Balinese life. This tranquil retreat had a pool surrounded by a lush, zen garden – waking up to the sound of chirping birds and rustling leaves felt like pure bliss.

Things to Experience in Sideman:

  • Wander around the rice fields and watch the farmers at work.

  • Visit the Gembleng Waterfalls, where a slightly challenging climb rewards you with a refreshing spring water bath.

  • Enjoy fresh, local food cooked with ingredients grown in the villa’s gardens.

3. Kintamani: Lakes, Hot Springs, and a Volcanic Adventure

Our next stop was Kintamani, located beside a serene lake. We stayed at Segara Camp Kintamani, which is like glamping, but with an added luxury – your own hot spring tub! The hot springs here are an ideal way to unwind after a long day of exploring. One of the highlights of this area was hiking up Mount Batur to catch the sunrise.

The hike began at 3 AM, and after a two-hour trek on volcanic rocks, we reached the summit to witness the most spectacular sunrise I’ve ever seen. Meeting the monkeys who roam freely at the top of the mountain was another memorable moment!

Must-Do Activities in Kintamani:

  • Take a sunrise hike to Mount Batur.

  • Soak in the rejuvenating hot springs near Lake Batur.

  • Enjoy stargazing from your camp at night – it’s magical!

4. Uluwatu: Surf, Sea, and Stunning Views

Our final destination was Uluwatu, famous for its stunning cliff-top views and world-class surfing spots. We stayed at Rock 'n Reef Hotel, which was right on the sea – a dream for anyone who loves the ocean. The views of surfers riding the waves were mesmerizing, and the area had a laid-back vibe that made it a perfect place to wind down.

What to Do in Uluwatu:

  • Catch a traditional Kecak Dance performance at Uluwatu Temple during sunset.

  • Try the local dishes like Nasi Goreng and indulge in fresh mango and papaya.

  • Take time to relax at the beach and watch the sunset over the ocean.

Key Takeaways from My Bali Adventure:

  1. Stay Connected with Nature: Opt for eco-friendly accommodations and immerse yourself in the local way of life. Places like Joglo Organik Guesthouse and Kubu Sakian Villa offer a chance to live in harmony with nature.

  2. Explore Beyond the Tourist Spots: While Ubud and Uluwatu are well-known, lesser-visited places like Sideman and Kintamani offer unique and more authentic experiences.

  3. Seek Out New Adventures: Don’t miss out on activities like the Mount Batur sunrise hike or bathing in waterfalls – these are the experiences you’ll remember for a lifetime.

  4. Support Local: Enjoy the local cuisine, shop at independent stores, and contribute to the local economy.

  5. Self-Discovery and Wellness: Bali’s natural beauty and calming vibe make it an ideal place for self-reflection and personal growth. Whether it's yoga, meditation, or simply being present in the moment, there’s something truly rejuvenating about Bali.
